Five Minutes with Natalie Walton

Recently we had the great pleasure of working with stylist Natalie Walton to create our new outdoor shots. She made us dream of hot summer days in the thick of winter – that’s no mean feat!

We spent five minutes with Natalie to find out what’s making her tick.

How did you become a stylist? I worked at Real Living magazine as deputy editor about five years ago. After spending time developing concepts and briefs for stylists I wanted to have a go at putting the ideas into action myself.

What’s your favourite part of your job? Developing the concept, sourcing, playing on shoot day and seeing the storyboard at the end. Basically all of it, except packing and unpacking.

What’s the worst part? Unpacking and packing.

Portsea Sunbed

What was the process behind working on the Freedom outdoor shoot? Remembering what fun summer is in the heart of winter! And creating places where you want to be.

What are you looking forward to about summer? The sun. Family time. Adventure.

Favourite song at the moment? I have three young and talkative children. So at the moment I revel in silence. But I am partial to a bit of Bill Withers. I’m a little old school when it comes to music.

Indoors or outdoors? 50-50 tie.

Colour or neutrals? Neutrals with a dash of blue.

Summer or Winter? Spring – it’s all about the anticipation.

Cocktails or champagne? A champagne cocktail.

Favourite meal? Right now? One that I don’t have to cook. And perhaps something spicy as it’s off the menu at home for now.

Yellow or pink? Honestly? I’m not a huge fan of either – definitely more of a blue palette person. Although I have been drawn to pops of neon pink recently.

Source of inspiration? Film, photography and the imagined worlds of books.

Can you ever have too many cushions? Not when your children use them for their cubby house.

Bed. Unmade or made? I like it made, but casually so – as if you’re about to slip back in. At the moment I have to confess that most days I give up on making it as my kids always see it as a play opportunity and the pillows are back at the base and the sheets every which way.

Morning or night time? My modus operandi at the moment is from about 8pm to 1am.

Finish this sentence: I really love… life: people, places, family, home.

Book that made the most impact? A moveable feast by Ernest Hemingway. “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you.”

Entertaining at home or going out? I do enjoy having people over and going completely over the top – that’s half the fun.

Favourite Freedom product at the moment? The Holt Round Side Table is pretty special. Not only is it good-looking but I was impressed to discover that you can mix ‘n’ match the tabletops and bases.
