Talking Christmas with Lisa Tilse of the red thread

As we’re hurtling towards Christmas, with only four weeks to go (!), we thought we’d ask some of our favourite friends about their take on Christmas.

Today we’re chatting with Lisa Tilse of the red thread. Lisa has worked with us many times, hosting in store workshops, and creating videos with us to inspire better gift giving (because if you’re like us, you LOVE beautiful wrapping almost as much as you love a thoughtful gift). If you’re looking for the motherload of inspiration, then head to her website, she never ceases to amaze and inspire.

Lisa on Christmas: I love Christmas! I love the decorations, the gift giving, the shared meals and coming to a stop after the busy lead up. Roxy, my 10 year old daughter, and I have some new family traditions we started, including: baking and decorating a gingerbread house together, and every year since she was a baby I’ve bought her a new decoration for the Christmas tree. Since Roxy was about four she’s chosen them herself, and by the time she leaves home she’ll have a lovely collection linked to lovely memories. But I’ll still continue to buy her one every year long after that and I hope we continue to bake gingerbread houses together too.

Are you an organised gift-giver? Or a last minute shopper? I’m a bit of both. If I see the perfect gift for someone during the year I’ll get it, so I sporadically buy things over a period of time. But I’m also an organised shopper and I can do it all in a day just before Christmas if I need to… with a well thought out list in hand.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received? Oh goodness, I’m not sure if I could choose just one. I do love receiving little things that I may not buy for myself, like gorgeous soap, luxurious hand cream, or a pair of diamond studs.

What’s the best part of Christmas for you? I enjoy the lead up to it: decorating, buying and wrapping gifts, the excitement of children, even the carols playing in the shops. Christmas day itself is always a lovely day regardless of if it’s shared with a lot of people or just a small gathering.

Do you have a favourite Christmas carol? I love the old carol ‘Silver Bells’ because it was my mum’s favourite and it reminds me of her singing it out of tune on purpose.

What’s on your wishlist this year?

This oversized floor cushion is perfect for lazy summer evenings – putting my feet up with a book and a cool drink, sitting on the floor and using it as a table to play cards with my daughter – and the lovely soft aqua colour is divine.

String lights are perfect for Christmas and beyond and this simple bulb design is fabulous.

Baskets are perfect for storing all sorts of things and they look great as decorator pieces when grouped, or on their own. Freedom has such a good looking range of baskets at the moment… almost too many to choose from!

The lovely contemporary design of the Olly chair really appeals to me, and it’s comfortable too. It’s perfect for sitting and catching a summer breeze on my verandah.

Who doesn’t love a flamingo? I’d put this beauty on my Olly chair, grab a G&T and dream of a Miami holiday.
